What do you think the big weaknesses of MT are, just out of curiosity? IE what would you do differently if you had Moveable Pixel? :)

MT has suited my purposes quite well so far. I think the only thing I'd want is a slightly more complex categorization system, something that could provide two levels of categories, to organizing photos a into both equipment and theme. But it seems like that would be a good thing to have for a photoblog or a regular blog.

I have finally gotten my MT to do most of the things I have wanted. But this is only after adding many plugins and tweaking the functionality of MT to suit my site design.

ie, for me to post a photo on my site I post the image in the main entry portion, I post additional text in the extended entry section and I post my thumbnails in the excerpt section. These of course are not the intended uses for these fields. but I made them work for me.

I find the main problem with MT and using it for photoblogs is that most photographers that want to start a photoblog are not programmers or developers (in the geeky sense). I'm lucky and have learned over the years, but getting from point A) downloading MT to B) running a photoblog with MT is not an easy task. There are main things that you need to add and optimize to get to your end product.

If I were to create MP (Movable Pixels) it would be relatively easy to install, and it would work out of the box (ie I wouldn't have to install various plugins, it would have appropriate fields for your main picture, your text and your thumbnails and it would have things like two levels of categorization. )

Just so you know, I do believe there is a plugin availble to allow for subcategories. But like you I would want category groups. a) a group for equipment categorization, b) a group for theme categorization, c) a group of location categorization. etc etc...

And then on top of that, each categorization also doubles as a photo album or gallery.

I could seriously talk (errr type) for hours on this subject, but none of the blogging companies want to limit themselves.

PS: if any of the blogging developers (blogger, sixapart) in California want to fly me out to their headquarters for a few weeks to pick my brain and work this out, I would be happy to make myself available.

When I started my photoblog, I wanted something modular and free to run it on, and managed to find Blosxom, which is basically a small CGI script that comes with a billion optional plug-ins. It would have been great if my blog was text-only but it turned out to be a real PITA to customize and deal with photos. Since then I've been using Folderblog to run my site -- it's a small PHP script based on templates, is very simple, seems fairly customisable, and works well out of the box. No databases required -- it just indexes pictures in directories and builds thumbs and archive pages from them. The layout is all done with style sheets, which has inspired me to learn how to use them (my web design knowledge fossilized around 1996).

I say we just poke and prod Kendall to package and release his handcoded and quite snazzy system to the world. New house be damned!

Up until a few weeks ago, I was hard core Movable Type. But then through this site, I learned of Pixelpost. which I have switched to since.
Sure it is a new program, with not as many features as movable type, but it is still very much in deveopment. The creator is very active on his forum helping users with questions they have, as well as asking for ideas to improve his software.

pixelpost doesn't work on windows, and from my experience the forum support is awful. After almost a month, my question was still left unanswered. I've tried MT and many other publishing scripts, and I think folderblog is the best to use for photobloging. It's light, simple and the support is the best i've seen.

As far as I know, Pixel post will work on any computer, their website says for requirements:

Webhosting somewhere with an Apache webserver and PHP plus MySQL installed (that's my working environment). To have Exif data displayed PHP need to be compiled with --exif-enabled flag. GD-lib required for thumbnailing. Tested and installed on Unix, Linux and Mac OS X.
PHP 4.3.0 or higher. MySQL 3.23.58 or higher. Should do it...

It says it was tested on unix linux and macosx, which is fine, but that doesn't mean it wont run on a win box machine, so long as you have all the required server addons.

I also looked at folderblog, and thought it was good, but not good for what I wanted to do with it.

I had the latest php, mysql, apache and everything was configured correctly, but when I tried to log in as an admin I would get errors. I tried reinstalling everything several times, but with no luck.
