View Article  Generic Photos : Why oh why?
In the on-going saga of imagery vs. generic photos, "dr. judge" posted his reasoning behind starting his parody of Sam's site.

I have to admit, I agree on some of his points, but I don't know if I would have went through the trouble of creating a whole mock site just to prove a point.

Check it out and decide for yourself.

View Article  Kodak Lecture Series
Ryerson's School of Image Arts has finally posted the entire schedule for their 2004/2005 Kodak Lecture Series, which can be found here:

http://www.imagearts.ryerson.ca/imagesandideas/pages/current.html

The majority of these lecture presenters are photographers, although some are filmmakers, etc. I attended 3 of the lectures last year and really enjoyed them. They last about 1-2hrs, and you have to get there almost an hour early or you won't get a seat. Last year when I saw Andres Serrano's lecture, the place was already jam-packed by the time I got there (an hour early) and I literally got the very last chair in the place...others ended up on the floor!

If you would like to see the web broadcasts from any of last year's lectures, you can find them all here:

Cheers,
Carrie

Here's a theme you can do and not even leave the house, especially with all the wet weather we have been getting lately. This week's Photo Friday is Still Life. The best thing about a Still Life is that it won't move on you. Just remember, to get the sharpest image, consider shooting with a tripod.
View Article  Theme Thursday : Ads
This week's Theme Thursday is Ads. Considering that we live in Canada's biggest metropolis, it shouldn't be a problem capturing something interesting. In fact, has anyone seen those bus shelters with the ad, "Have you had your Morning Pot?". It's an advertisement for tea. Definitely photo worthy.

View Article  HORIZON S3pro Panoramic Camera
I think Gayla is the only photoblogger in the city that currently has a Horizon. I saw someone else at the Pinback concert last week with one, but those are the only two I have ever seen. If you have been thinking about getting one of these beauties, it may be a wise idea to get the newest model, the S3pro. The current price of the 202 model is approximately $275 US. The S3pro retails between $325 and $340. It also seems like there are some floating around on ebay.

Zenit Press Release 26/10/04

JSC "Krasnogorsky zavod" has started a serial production of the new "HORIZON S3pro" panoramic camera. This camera will be on the market at the beginning of March, 2004.

"HORIZON S3pro" panoramic camera opens new horizons before you. There are landscapes, indoor scenes, sport events, architecture, reports of an absolutely another size. Using the 35mm standard film you are taking pictures of everything in your view without losses. It's the amazing opportunity for an experiment.

Availability of slow shutter speeds allows to take pictures at reduced illumination and at night.

The proper position of the camera during photographing is controlled by means of the level seen in the viewfinder. Would you like to improvise? Replace the level bubble up or down from the central position and you will get an unusual effect.

The camera body is light, strongly constructed and exceptionally human engineered. It's designed in such a way that makes the camera handy under all conditions of photography.

There are the principal distinctions from the previous "Horizon-202" model:

UPRATED RESOLUTION;
TWO ADDITIONAL SHUTTER SPEEDS - 1/30SEC AND 1SEC;
SHUTTER NOISELESS WORKING;
MODERN DESIGN.

info via PhotographyBLOG

NOTE: This press release was dated yesterday, but the camera was released in March of this year. (I was a little confused at first when I started finding active sellers, thinking it was being released in March 2005. It is actually already on the market)

View Article  Your Profile
One of the cool features on blogware is being able to create your own profile once you have signed up for a reader account. Creating a profile allows you to share a picture of yourself and other info such as your website address and your email. Also your profile is global, so you can leave comments on any other blogware site and they can reach the same information.

I was talking to Davin last week about being able to update you profile. And now it is one step easier as there is a hyperlink in the title bar allowing you to update your profile. Click now, it only takes a minute or two to set up.

Here is a TIP. when you add your website address, flag it as Public.
View Article  Digital SLR round up and poll
There has been some discussion recently as to which Digital SLR is better. I thought I would start up a thread here to open up discussion on the topic. I'll add more links to the cameras in question as soon as comments start to appear.

Canon 20D 8.2 mp ($2199.99 for kit)*
Canon 10D 6.3 mp (no longer in production)**
Canon Digital Rebel 6.3 mp ($1299.99 for kit)*
Nikon D70 6.0 mp ($1769.99 for kit)*
Nikon D1x 5.47mp ($4199.99)

*Note prices may vary from store to store and also depend on which lens you purchase with your camera.
**The Canon 10D can be found on the used market for approx. $1000 to $1200.

I know a number of people here have Digital SLR's in the community.

a) What Digital SLR do you own?
b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase?
c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand?
d) What do you like best about your DSLR?
e) What do you hate about your DSLR?
f) Would you recommend your DSLR?

This was in the Toronto Star on Saturday, thanks to Carrie for bring this to my attention

The weirdest form of flattery

Consider yourself flattered, Sam. The Daily Dose of Imagery (wvs.topleftpixel.com) has become must viewing for a growing number of Torontonians. The photoblog's purveyor, Sam Javanrouh, uploads a new digital image each day, artfully capturing a slice of Toronto (and sometimes Paris, Iran or Whitby) life.

But this week, an anonymous site appeared, calling itself The Daily Dose of Generic Photos (toprightpixel.uer.ca). It perfectly mocks the original, with a heavily PhotoShopped daily image that looks like Javanrouh's photography on mushrooms. The weird thing is, these two sites work better as Web companions that the original does on its own, making the imitator equally indispensible viewing.

Although we tend to shoot with some of the latest and greatest digital cameras, Toronto photobloggers are no strangers to the toy camera phenomenon.

Currently there is a show running (September 30th to October 31st) at Shift Gallery (688 Richmond Street West) featuring the work of four Toronto photographers shooting with different Lomo cameras; The Holga, The Action Sampler, Pop 9 and the Super Sampler.

The Lomographic Society of Canada is proud to present an exhibition of new works by four Toronto photographers. Each artist will be working with a different LOMO camera and concentrating on a unique theme to accentuate that cameras strengths. Originating in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Leningradskoje Optiko Mechanitscheskoje Objedin鮩e (LOMO) company has been manufacturing single-lense cameras for over twenty years, with a lean towards multi-lense cameras since 1998.

On Friday October 22nd, they are throwing a closing party to celebrate International Toy Camera Day.

Back in September, I wrote a quick review of Mark Hancock's site PhotoJournalism on the photoblogs.org blog. It seems he has inspired a few other PJ's to come out of the woodwork.
PJ - The Rookie Season
A little insight into my first steps in the world of Photojournalism.

Wanna be a PJ
Pictures by a college student who someday may be a REAL Photojournalist...

Michael Rubenstein
This is the beginning of my career in Photo Journalism. Take a look, critique my work, help me get better.

On my search for other photojournalist sites, I found America Is.... It's the blog of a freelance photojournalist traveling across the US on a mission to hit all 48 contiguous states and record personal stories along the way.

And of course I couldn't write a post on photojournalism without including a link to our very own Zoran Milich who runs the site, I'll Call you Zee. He has travelled all around the world, on assignment for different media organizations. If you haven't done so already, check out the Zee at work section of his site as well as his published Children's books.

View Article  Eforcity
This is being reposted here for Kendall. This info was originally posted by me on the photoblogs.org blog

Just wanted to share info on my most recent ebay purchase.

A travel charger and battery plus a pair of two batteries for my Canon 10D

So now I have 3 extra batteries for my 10D (which is more than enough backup) and a car charger, all for 25 dollars US plus shipping... which came out to less than 50 bucks Canadian (which is way less than half the price of a replacement/extra battery in retail stores).

Try going to your local Best Buy for a deal like that. It can't be beat and the batteries work perfectly fine. I got my shipment in the post earlier this week.

All this can be found at the following ebay store: Eforcity although I think it is a tad cheaper if you search for one of the auctions.

I highly recommend them and they have all sorts of other supplies and batteries for an assortment of techie toys.

I've had my batteries for a number of weeks now and I have had no problems using them. They are fantastic.
View Article  PhotoVu Wi-Fi Picture Frame
Look it's a photo frame. It's wifi enabled, and you can add a 40 gig hard drive. All this for only $1,600 US fully loaded (Yes, you can go surfing to another page now that I have lost your interest).

Not sure how economical this is for the average person, but with the right sponsorship, this would be the perfect medium for a public photoblogger exhibit.

You could set up half a dozen of these photoframes in the gallery and each photoblogger in the group exhibit could have their own screen with their photos in rotation. The beauty of course is the ability to come into the gallery and upload any fresh new shots, even after the exhibit has opened. Wouldn't that be cool.

Yes I'm dreaming, but I like to dream BIG.
