I CAME TO DANCE!

Part of the on going Cityshoots series at Le Petit Déjeuner, I CAME TO DANCE! is a collection of photos taken at various House parties in Toronto over the last year from venues like 99 Sudbury, Sunnyside Pavilion, The Rivoli, and West.

I'm inviting you all to come and check out my work over the next six weeks. Sign the guest book (if I have it ready in time), and spend a little cash while you're there. LPD has a good brunch, and great artwork up for sale (wink, nudge).

View Article  Picture The Cure 2006
Dear Friends,

The second annual "Picture the Cure" is underway and we'd like to invite you to be a part of this special event to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

First and foremost, you are cordially invited:

Picture the Cure 2006
August 21 (Monday)
6pm-midnight
The Gladstone Hotel
1214 Queen Street West

Advance tickets: $10
At the door: $15

Our goal for this year is to raise at least $5,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society who, along with the Terry Fox Foundation, is the primary source of funding for the National Cancer Institute of Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society:

* funds research on all types of cancer
* offers comprehensive and credible information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment
* provides support for people living with cancer, family members and friends

We have the support of the Ontario branch, and have their endorsement to include their logo and name to promote the event.

Our plan for August 21:

300 attendees
100+ matted and framed prints on display for silent auction with artist information
live entertainment
door prizes/raffles
light fare

How you can help:

1. Photography/digital imagery/painting

You can enter up to three pictures to the auction gallery, but once your submission is accepted, there will be an entry fee of 35$ CAD per photograph to cover the printing/framing costs (lower price for smaller pictures, minimum $20 CAD). You will be provided with a ftp account to upload your full resolution picture to a secure server. This picture will also be featured on the "Picture the Cure" website (in the works), along with your biography and link to your personal website.

There will be no other hidden fees required from you. The reason I am asking for a participation fee is because all prints will be handled at once and printing/framing costs are much more affordable this way. The goal is to donate as much money as possible to the foundation and we can only achieve this by minimizing expenses.

The costs for printing, matting, and framing for photography/digital imagery are as follows:

12x18, 12x12 - $35
8x12, 8x10 - $30
5x7 - $20

Please note the above prices are at cost. If you wish to provide the print, contact us for adjusted prices. We'll need ALL SUBMISSIONS by the end of June so they are ready in time.

2. Sponsorship

We are also still searching for sponsors for the following:

- catering
- live entertainment
- items for raffle (autographed merchandise, books, certificates, spa vouchers, or the like -- Botox injections? subscriptions to "Martha Stewart Living"?)

If you've got friends who do catering, are in the entertainment biz, or have any goods or services we can promote the hell out of on August 21 in the name of charity, send them our way!

3. Volunteers

If you would like to lend your assistance at the Gladstone, we will be only too glad to delegate. Please let us know.

Last but not least, thank you in advance for all your help -- we greatly appreciate it.

Your devoted organizers,
Irina and Gail

Hi all,

Just wanted to share some news about exciting blog related initiatives happening at the AGO.

I've been working with the gallery to start embracing the blogging community in the city as media. As a first initiative, a group of bloggers - photo, video, podcast & others - will be reporting from the opening launch of the Frank Gehry exhibit next Tuesday. The group will have almost total access and I'm hoping some wonderfully creative work will be produced.

There's some more info here: http://singer.to/2006/02/09/blogging-at-the-ago/

As well, you may want check out the AGO blog: http://www.artmatters.ca/

It's my pleasure to officially announce a new project called "Portraits in the Park". Starting next week, once a week, throughout the summer, I will set up shop at one of our local parks armed with a tripod and my Yashica Mat 124G. At the beginning of each week, I will announce a location and time where I will be shooting.

I will take photos of any and all willing participants. One shot per person. Come in costume, come dressed up, come as you are, just come to the park. I will do this as a free service to all who participate, but I will accept a suggested 5 dollar donations for each portrait [for film and processing]. Each participant will recieve a copy of their photo and a scan. Please spread the word and check back at http://www.photojunkie.ca on Monday, July 18th to find out when and where the first location will be.
View Article  Doors Open Toronto - May 28th and 29th
Rannie mentioned Doors Open Ontario a month or so ago, and the details for Doors Open Toronto is now available at http://www.doorsopen.org Mark Saturday, May 28 & Sunday, May 29, 2005 on your calendars.

I've never been before, I'm curious to hear what experiences people have had in the past, and to see the pictures you've taken. Any hidden gems out there we've passed by for years without realizing the beauty behind, well, the closed doors?

You can find details on most of the buildings on the Doors Open web page, and I've found John Sewell's book Doors open Toronto - Illuminating the City's Great Spaces very helpful too.

Many of the locations are well known photo-blog sites, but there looks like other interesting places as well. I'll start the list with a link to my archive of shots at seems Artless. My favorite (so far) is the shot of City Hall using a Lensbaby.

Spring is here, the snow is melted and the flowers are beginning to bloom. It's the perfect opportunity to hop in a car and go on a road trip.

Many of you are aware of Doors Open Toronto, which opens the doors to many historical buildings and places to the public. This year, Doors Open Toronto will be taking place on May 28th and 29th. But did you realize that several other cities and towns throughout Ontario also have Doors Open events? Between April and October there are several locations across southern Ontario that are opened to the public.

Check out the Doors Open Ontario website for details. Perhaps if there are specific locations that of interest, maybe we could do a couple of group field trips over the next few months.
View Article  Neistat Brothers in town this weekend for a filmfest

Hi all,

I think this looks really cool. I blogged it over at my site & am pasting the post below.
Cheers!

Eli

---------------------

Again with the Neistat brothers - a great short involving the Holland Tunnel in NYC. I'm looking forward to checking them out Saturday night at Camera.

From EYE Weekly:

"Van, 29, and Casey, 24, grew up in Connecticut, where they earned the attention of law enforcement officials for such offences as dealing pot, setting fields on fire and shooting air rifles out of car windows.

They are now based in New York City, where they have made 127 films in the last five years. That's more than enough movies for the Neistats to justify throwing their own festival. At Camera on the weekend of April 1-2, they host two nights of screenings in their first-ever live appearance, where they will be offering viewers complimentary tequila.

The movies are the real reason to look forward to the Neistat brothers' appearance, they're part of a new wave of wiseass, web-friendly, ultra-prolific filmmakers. These dudes revel in the freedom they get from working outside the traditional channels of movie production."

View Article  Reminder - Kodak Lecture Series: JANIETA EYRE
JANIETA EYRE
November 12, 2004 - Ryerson University, Lecture Hall LIB-72
7:30 p.m., Free - show up early

Toronto-based photographer and filmmaker Janieta Eyre has quickly gained notoriety in the contemporary art world with her surreal portraits of herself as twins. Starkly graphic, her carefully composed photos explore notions of the uncanny and the double in a playful yet disquieting fashion.

With the 2000 Lady Lazarus series, Eyre used 19th century spirit photography as a reference point for her explorations of death, resurrection, and genetic engineering. Drawing inspiration from a dream and the series title from a poem by Sylvia Plath, the colour and selenium-toned black and white images of the series "seemed to exist in a place at once the past and the future."

What I Haven't Told You , Eyre's current body of work, continues her exploration of the theatrically staged photograph and the affinity of photography for phantom presences which can be sensed but not seen. Eyre has also recently made the jump from photography to filmmaking with her first short film, entitled So Now We Understand Each Other . Based on a short story she wrote about a woman who believes her two dolls are her children, the film continues Eyre's exploration of motherhood as a complex and strange human relationship.

Janieta Eyre was born in London , England and was educated in Toronto where she received a philosophy degree from the University of Toronto . She also studied journalism part-time at Ryerson University and photography at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She lives and works in Toronto and is represented by the Christopher Cutts Gallery (Toronto) and Diane Farris Gallery (Vancouver).

Eyre has exhibited widely in Italy, Germany, Iceland, the United States and across Canada and was recently invited to participate in the Kwanju Biennale in South Korea. Eyre has been featured in several recent publications including Hive Magazine, Collezione Edge, and Faking Death and recently won a "Shine" award for Best Digital Imagery from Horizon Zero. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (Ottawa), Microsoft (New York), and the National Gallery of Iceland (Reykjavik).
