There has been some discussion recently as to which Digital SLR is better. I thought I would start up a thread here to open up discussion on the topic. I'll add more links to the cameras in question as soon as comments start to appear.
Canon 20D 8.2 mp ($2199.99 for kit)*
Canon 10D 6.3 mp (no longer in production)**
Canon Digital Rebel 6.3 mp ($1299.99 for kit)*
Nikon D70 6.0 mp ($1769.99 for kit)*
Nikon D1x 5.47mp ($4199.99)
*Note prices may vary from store to store and also depend on which lens you purchase with your camera.
**The Canon 10D can be found on the used market for approx. $1000 to $1200.
I know a number of people here have Digital SLR's in the community.

a) What Digital SLR do you own?
I have a Canon 10D b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? Yes very much so. c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? I already had a Canon 35mm SLR, so sticking with Canon was a logical choice for me. d) What do you like best about your DSLR? I love the weight of the camera, it's heavy and sturdy and feeld like a real camera. I hate how light other DSLR feel. It's even heftier than my film camera. e) What do you hate about your DSLR? I can't say anything bad about my camera. I suppose that I could complain how unstealthy it is, but that's not really the purpose of this camera. My only other complaint would be the 1.6 magnification because of the lack of a full frame sensor. Of course a full frame sensor is a whole different price range. f) Would you recommend your DSLR? The 10D is no longer in production, but I would definitely recommend a 20D, which is cheaper than what I paid for my 10D. Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

This is great Rannie. I'll be buying a digital SLR towards the end of next year, if I return to China. I'm sure I'll be narrowing it down to a Canon or Nikon, but how do I decide?

a) Nikon D1x
b) Yes, definitely! c) I've always worked with Nikon product professionally so it was a logical choice for my personal camera. d) like photojunkie, the heavy frame of the camera is a big plus for me. I like a solid camera. e) The only criticism I have of the D1x at the moment would be the batteries, which seem to need frequent conditioning. However, once they're done up they work great. f) I would - although now I'm looking at the D2x ... slobber slobber Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

a) What Digital SLR do you own?
Canon Digital Rebel aka 300D b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? Very. But I am still looking forward to the end of the warranty to upgrade the firmware and get all the features from the 10D. c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? I already had a Canon Rebel G and I needed to save money. Being able to use my old lenses was the reason I didn't switch to another brand. d) What do you like best about your DSLR? I like the fact that it feels sturdy and light in the same time. I have not yet been disappointed by a picture I took with it. With a 50mm 1.8 lens I can take great low light pics and avoid using the flash. e) What do you hate about your DSLR? The point and shoot modes. Especially the all automatic one, it has a lot of difficulty not overexposing the sky. f) Would you recommend your DSLR? Yes, if you have just the minimum amount of photography skills you can shoot amazing pictures. Although I think the 20D is a great camera, for half price you can get a good enough camera for all kinds of photography. Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

a) What Digital SLR do you own?
Nikon D-70 b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? Very c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? Lot more bang for the buck. Most professional reviews favored it over the Cannon DSLR (Rebel) at the time I purchased. d) What do you like best about your DSLR? The freedom it gives me to experiment and learn.(battery life and fast startup time as well) e) What do you hate about your DSLR? Nothing Really (maybe a faster connection to the iBook? like a USB2 or FireWire or sth?) f) Would you recommend your DSLR? Definitely!!! a) Canon 10D - What Digital SLR do you own?
b) I'm very satisfied with my purchase. c) I've had excellent luck with Canon (9k+ pics on my old S100 Digital Elph and still going strong) and a friend was selling his 10D. (My reason for choosing the 10D) d) Like others have said, the general feel/weight of the camera, plus I really like my lens (CANON EF 28-135MM/3.5-5.6 IS USM) and having a proper flash (420ex speedlight). (What I like) e) It is showing its age in the small features, like no shutter delay (besides the 10 second timer). Does the 20D have this feature? (What I don't like) f) For sure, a used 10D, or a 20D. (Would I recommend my camera) Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase?
Very. But I am still looking forward to the end of the warranty to upgrade the firmware and get all the features from the 10D. Riri - what exactly are you talking about here? Is this code for saying that you're going to get yourself a 10D? Or is there a way to "upgrade" the rebel? Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

Miles recently left me a comment on my site saying this:
"Oh, and I was reading today about a hacked firmware update you can download that 'releases' a lot of the 10D features for the 300D that canon artificially restricted to prevent the 300D being too competitive with the 10D. You can grab it here http://satinfo.narod.ru/en/download.html there's good info here http://www.bahneman.com/liem/photos/tricks/digital-rebel-tricks.html I haven't had a chance to take a look at it myself yet, but it probably has good info. a) What Digital SLR do you own?
Nikon D70 b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? YES YES YES!! c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? I already had a Nikon SLR and various lenses so Nikon was the logical choice for me--I also liked that the look of the camera was almost exactly what I'd come from--less learning curve for the basics... d) What do you like best about your DSLR? What do I like best? hmm...The White Balance bracketing which happens with a single shot (3 frames with varying tones), the speed of recording, the speed at which the camera fires, the highlight information screen which shows overblown areas of the image as you shoot it---the list goes on and on! e) What do you hate about your DSLR? I don't like that there is no multiple exposure option on this camera. I've shot with a Fuji S2 and it's an option on that body--wish the D70 had that for creative stuff. Other than that, I have no real complaints. f) Would you recommend your DSLR? In a heartbeat ! Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

a) What Digital SLR do you own? Nikon D70 – for 6 months now
b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? Yes, I’m thrilled! c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? I liked the looks and feel of the camera compared to the Digital Rebel, and the positive reviews cemented it. Plus, I already owned a Nikon. d) What do you like best about your DSLR? 1)It takes incredible pictures – the equal of a film SLR, I feel. ISO up to 1600 with little noise. 2)The speed – virtually instantaneous on, no discernable shutter lag, really quick autofocus. 3)The battery life is amazing. I’ve never had the battery run out, even in 3 hours of virtually continuous shooting with flash (at a rock concert). e) What do you hate about your DSLR? I love this camera. Minor complaints: 1)Would be nice if it supported USB 2.0 interface or firewire 2) would be nice to shoot RAW plus high-quality jpeg, as the low-quality jpegs often don’t come close to describing the shots (I shoot in RAW format almost exclusively) 3)The software that comes with the camera sucks; you would think Nikon could do better. f) Would you recommend your DSLR? Yes, it’s hard to imagine how this camera could disappoint. Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

a) What Digital SLR do you own?
Digital Rebel b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? Yes, very. c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? Price and compatibility with my other EOS len's d) What do you like best about your DSLR? aside from it being digital, I like the no shutter lag. e) What do you hate about your DSLR? Slow file transfers from camera to computer through usb 1 cord. the 1.6 conversion for lens'. I'm going to have to buy a wide angle now. f) Would you recommend your DSLR? Yes definitely, for the price, you cant beat it. The images are crisp and clean. Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

I'm planning on buying a canon rebel (300d) when I get back to Toronto next month. I already have canon lenses for my film SLR and the reviews I've read favour the 300d, especially at the price. The price of the D70 is comparable to the 10d rather than the 300d and considering the image quality of the 300d is comparable to the 10d it's a bargain.
I would buy a 10d if I could find one for the same money as the 300d but it's hard to justify it otherwise, especially now they're available in black and you can 'upgrade' the firmware to unlock many of the features that have been artificially restricted. The only thing that puts me off the 300d is its build quality, but it's not that bad, it's sturdy enough, it's only when you compare it to the more expensive models with proper metal frames that it seems a little flimsy. Now the second hand market for the 10d is growing I might look around and see what's available when I get to town. btw, www.adencamera.com in toronto are selling the 300d kit for $100 than most other places, $1199 for the kit and there doesn't seem to be any mail in jiggery pokery to get that either. oh and I'm happy, I just won a rolleicord V on ebay for $150 :) Re: Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

I like Aden. They have really good prices, and I managed to get $150 off my Nikon flash unit with my very modest haggling skills.
Enjoy the 'cord. Take time to learn how to compose on a TLR, 'cos they'll make you feel giddy at first. Re: Re: Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

I hadn't even heard of aden before but they seem really cheap, the body onl y300d is $999 and the 20d $1999.
Can't wait to play with the rollei but I'll be patient! Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

I'm very happy with my D70. Really, the current crop of DSLRs all give you the same facility, it just depends which lens family you want to buy into; sharp, contrasty (but perhaps a little cold) Nikon, or higher resolution but more muted Canon. 'suptae, as we Scottish types like to say.
I love the flash control on the D70, and the off-camera wireless TTL modes are fantastic. If one has to find a very minor downside to the camera, it doesn't have a real raw mode. I could care less about this, as the standard JPEGs print delightfully at 20x25 cm. Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

Was at the HENRY'S clearance centre just before close picking up a vertical grip for my Canon A2.
Anyway, they just received a used Canon 10D for sale... dunno the price, but i assume it won't last the day. Just a head up for any keeners. Assuming one of the employees didn't buy it. Re: Digital SLR round up and poll

a) What Digital SLR do you own?
I own a Nikon D70 b) Are you Satisfied with your purchase? Yes, I am highly satisfied. Not a problem that I have encountered yet. c) What was your main reason for choosing your camera over another brand? Well I went to Henrys and I tried Canon, Nikon and Olympus dSLRs. Canon had way too many problems (the XT is full of problems from my experience), I didnt like the look and feel of Olympus, and the Nikon seemed to be perfect. I had full intentions of getting a Rebel XT until I got to try it. d) What do you like best about your DSLR? The fact that it takes stunning pictures with amazing detail, and it has a really good lens considering it is a kit lens. Oh and the battery life, and speed is just amazing. e) What do you hate about your DSLR? Hah I wish I could think of something... f) Would you recommend your DSLR? Without a doubt. I, also have a Nikon D70. It is a fine piece of technology and it last through years better than other models. I wouldn't recommend another model because this one fits my needs perfectly. The perfect DSLR is an illusion because there are different kinds of cameras for different purposes. I would say: choose the one which will give you less headaches (try tramadol for it) and the best balance between price and features.
